1998 suchte Michel Smeets einen Ascona A zum Fahren bei Slowly Sideways und fand einen alten Rallye-Ascona, an dem nicht viel mehr dran war als der Überrollbügel. Bei genauerer Untersuchung stellte Michel aber fest, dass es das Originalauto aus der niederländischen Meisterschaft 1976 war. Seinen Ascona hat er wie damals aufgebaut: mit Zweilitermotor (ohne Querstromkopf), 40mm-Weber-Vergaser, der alten Bremse aus dem Opel Rekord und mit einem Überrollkäfig statt eines Bügels.

Der Opel Ascona A mit dem 1,9-Liter-Motor war der erste Opel, der ganz vorne im Rallyesport mitfahren konnte. Er trug ganz wesentlich dazu bei, Opels biederes Image im Laufe der 70er-Jahre zu verändern. Er war technisch recht einfach, preiswert und effektiv und daher war es kein Wunder, dass der Ascona A schnell seinen Weg in zahlreiche Händler-Teams fand, wo er überall auf nationaler Ebene Erfolge erreichte. So auch in den Niederlanden, wo Koos Pannekoek mit diesem Ascona im Jahre 1976 den Titel in der Kategorie 2 gewann.

In 1998, Michel Smeets started looking for an Opel Ascona A to enter the Slowly Sideways events. After a while he found an old rally car which was reduced to not much more than the body shell and the roll cage. But when Michel looked at the car more closely, he realised that it was the original Dealer team Ascona from the 1976 Dutch Rally Championship. He then re-built his car like the original with a two-litre engine (without cross-flow cylinder head), 40 mm Weber carburettors, the old brakes from an Opel Rekord and a complete roll cage instead of a simple bar.

The Opel Ascona with its 1.9-litre engine was Opel’s first front-line rally car and did a lot to create the sporting image of the brand in the 1970s. It was a simple and cost-effective machine and spread very quickly into national championships all over the world. This included the Netherlands, where this Ascona won with Koos Pannekoek the national championship in the second category that year.

En 1998, Michel Smeets a commencé à chercher une Opel Ascona A pour participer aux événements Slowly Sideways. Après quelques temps, il trouva une vieille voiture de rallye réduite à pas grand-chose de plus que son châssis et l'arceau de sécurité Mais quand Michel regarda la voiture plus près, il s'est rendu compte que c'était l’originale Ascona de l’équipe de rallye des concessionnaires du Championnat néerlandais 1974. Il a ensuite re-construit cette voiture conforme à l'originale avec un moteur deux litres (sans culasse cross-flow), des carburateurs Weber 40 mm, les freins d'une vielle Opel Rekord et un arceau de sécurité complet au lieu d'un simple 4 points.

L’Opel Ascona avec son moteur de 1,9 litre était la première voiture de rallye Opel de premier rang et a fait beaucoup pour créer l'image sportive de la marque dans les années 1970. C'était une machine simple et efficace et elle s’est répandue très rapidement dans les championnats nationaux du monde entier. Les Pays-Bas en font partie, où cette Ascona a remporté avec Koos Pannekoek le championnat national dans la deuxième catégorie cette année-là.
